God is always in our midst. He communicates with us through many different mediums and moments. It’s our job to listen. If we listen, He will speak.

The first time I realized God was in my midst

The first time I remember interacting with the Holy Spirit in a deep way was at summer camp between my 7th and 8th grade year. The whole week we had been ministered to by the camp leaders, playing games and singing songs that I didn’t understand.

On the last day of camp, we were getting ready to pack up and did one last activity on the beach. I can’t explain it other than from the walk between the beach and the main campground building, maybe a quarter of a mile, I began to feel this stirring in my heart and began to share what I was experiencing with a camp counselor. Next thing I know, I’m breaking down, crying really hard. Like that ugly cry you hope nobody sees.

By the time we made it back up to the building, I had realized with the guidance of my camp counselor that God was calling to me. In that moment I accepted Jesus as my Savior, and He entered my heart. Since then I’ve never been the same.

Realizing how present God really is

God is regularly in the midst of our lives when we least expect it. I wasn’t planning to be changed in that moment, but my heart was in a posture of receiving His love, and so it came. That same power is available to you and I today.

God, through the majesty of Jesus, shows us what a fulfilled life looks like. There doesn’t always have to be some crazy revelation or jaw-dropping miracle before our very eyes to see that God is present in our midst.

He is in your morning coffee. He is in your daily commute to work. He speaks through the podcast host you listen to and the music you vibe with. I find God in the strangest places, and I always seem to find Him when I’m in a place to receive Him.

Finding God in the midst of our daily lives

So my question to you is this: what does it look like for you to be in a posture of receiving God? If you don’t know where to start, here’s just a couple thoughts.

Tip #1: Get away from all the distractions

If you want to see God, put the distractions away. Probably the worst thing that modern day society does for our spiritual connection to God is noise. Not the cars or planes or trains necessarily, although they are loud, but the little piece of tech on your phone or your wrist.

The devices that live on our person are detrimental to finding God. I’d encourage you to take some time away from the social media, calls, texts, lists and tasks, and all the other stuff that grabs for your attention. We’ve created a spiritual barrier that makes relationship with God so difficult.

Tip #2: Tell God what's on your mind

The second suggestion is to simply ask Him to enter into your world. God is always with us, but we are not always with Him. Even though He knows you entirely better than you know yourself, He still wants you to invite Him into your life.

Consider being vulnerable with the Father and allow Him to step into your life, into your home. Make Him a cup of tea (literally or figuratively), and sit with Him. Tell Him about your day.

Tell Him about what you’ve got coming up and the stresses in your life. God is like that best friend you have (or want to have). The best part is that He’s always available, so take Him up on the offer!

God loves you and me

My prayer for you today is that you get to see God as I see God, omnipresent, and omni-loving. He wants to be with you so deeply, and in order to experience that love, all you have to do is sit back and listen.

Love this, Mason! What a great reminder that God is always with us, even if we aren’t always with Him!
